Large images can cause your website to load too slowly or not at all. Even if you change how an image looks, it can still retain its original large file size (and pixel or dot-per-image count).
For example, your graphic designer may have sent you a high-resolution, large file size image needed for color printing purposes. If you try to use this as your website image, it may create problems – and if you reduce the image size correctly, it’ll still look fine on your website.

You can find image editing programs online, many of which are free.
The web-based tool PIXLR can be used to quickly resize images. We provide the instructions below as a courtesy and not as an endorsement or warranty.
-
Go to https://pixlr.com/
-
Look for PIXLR E (simple image editing).
-
Open the image file you want to edit, then from the File menu, select Save.
The Save options include Low, Medium, and High, and there's a Quality Slider bar. PIXLR will adjust quality automatically, and you can also use the Quality Slider to adjust this further.
-
When ready, select the Save As button. If you’ve already added the image to your website, you can save the resized image to the same location as the current image, and it will be overwritten. Alternatively, save it with a new name and add this image to your HTML website builder, removing the old one.
-
Update and save your website, then test your site by opening it in a browser to check how the images are loading.
